Escharotic Method: Information (English) Escharotic treatments are offered by various practitioners, particularly in the United States, within complementary care settings for a range of health-related topics. Within this approach, locally applied preparations are used as part of a non-conventional care pathway. The scientific evidence supporting this method is limited. Available publications vary in design, population, quality, and outcome measures. As a result, no clear conclusions can be drawn from the current literature regarding effectiveness, safety, or its position within conventional medical care. Escharotic treatments are not part of Dutch clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of CIN abnormalities or HPV-related conditions. In the Netherlands, standard care typically includes surveillance, colposcopy, histological examination, and, when indicated, standard treatments such as LEEP or conisation. Within HPV Health, this method is described exclusively as a complementary and non-routine approach. The importance of standard medical diagnostics and follow-up by a gynaecologist or general practitioner remains central in the management of HPV-related abnormalities. It is important that individuals remain under the care of their treating physician and continue to follow standard screening and follow-up recommendations. Diagnostic procedures such as Pap smears, HPV testing, colposcopy, and biopsies belong to standard medical practice and form the basis for assessment and management of cervical abnormalities. The literature includes research into factors associated with the development, persistence, and regression of HPV-related abnormalities, including HPV type, age, immune status, and lifestyle factors. The significance of these factors varies between individuals and cannot be directly translated into individual predictions. The described escharotic applications differ from other locally applied substances studied in medical literature, meaning that findings from different publications are not directly comparable. Different scientific and clinical perspectives exist regarding the role of complementary approaches alongside conventional care. HPV Health emphasizes the importance of medical diagnostics, guideline-based care, and individual decision-making in consultation with a qualified healthcare provider. We regularly receive questions from women who have undergone a LEEP or conisation and have concerns regarding follow-up, HPV detection, and disease progression. Clinical outcomes vary between individuals and depend on multiple medical and biological factors. Evaluation or treatment of cervical conditions can be emotionally impactful for some individuals. Support may therefore also include attention to questions, concerns, and emotional processing. Individual experiences differ. Self-application of escharotic substances or other non-conventional local treatments is not recommended. Decisions regarding diagnosis, treatment, or follow-up should always be made in consultation with a qualified healthcare professional.
